Markus Lenger and Gary Klein were initially tasked with gathering energy and water usage data from four buildings in San Bernardino, CA. Their goal was to determine the efficiency of heat pump hot water systems and identify those that fell short. They spent considerable time and money testing different technologies and found most of them to be unreliable, proprietary, expensive, and found that communication was a constant challenge. Frustrated with the lack of options, they decided to take matters into their own hands and design a system that would be tailored to their needs. They analyzed the entire process and sought input from industry experts to create a solution that was easy to set up and operate, yet powerful enough to handle all kinds of sensors and inputs. It became clear that utilizing a new set of technologies was needed to handle the analysis of an entire building, accommodating hundreds of sensors if needed. This required a system capable of collecting, analyzing, and securely storing data using Edge computing. With the data processed and stored on site and not in a cloud, the user can select whether to have data sent to a cloud provider for sharing or further analysis.
Knowing that they needed additional expertise to perfect time stamp management and communications, they added Daryl Miller, a software development expert, to their team. Daryl's skills were invaluable in developing custom firmware and data collectors that vastly expanded the BluSENSE software capabilities. This provided data security, improved latency, and much needed scalability. As a result, BluSENSE has paved the way for efficient, affordable, and effective data acquisition and management technology.
