How We Started — BluSENSE

Our Story

How We Started

BluSENSE was born out of frustration.

When water physicist Dr. Markus Lenger and building science expert Gary Klein were tasked with monitoring heat pump water heater performance across four buildings in San Bernardino, California, they assumed the hard part would be the analysis. It wasn't. The hard part was finding technology that actually worked.

They tested solution after solution.

Too Proprietary
Every platform locked data into its own ecosystem. Changing hardware meant losing everything.
Too Expensive
Subscription fees, licensing costs, and hardware mark-ups made serious monitoring unaffordable for most projects.
Too Unreliable
Communication failures, timestamp errors, and data gaps made the results untrustworthy. For two people who had spent careers demanding precision, it was unacceptable.

So they built their own.

Starting from first principles, Markus and Gary designed a system around one idea: that building data should be accurate, secure, accessible, and owned by the people who collected it. Edge computing — processing and storing data on site rather than routing everything through the cloud — became the foundation. No vendor lock-in. No data held hostage. No timestamp errors from server delays. Just clean, precise, real-time data from every sensor in the building.

Co-Founder
Dr. Markus Lenger

Water physicist and electrical engineer with over 35 years of experience in wastewater and building systems. His patented monitoring systems formed the technical foundation for BluSENSE.

Co-Founder
Gary Klein

Building science expert whose field experience in hot water systems and energy performance shaped the real-world design philosophy behind every BluSENSE product.

Technology
Daryl Miller

A 30-year IoT veteran whose expertise in embedded systems and data management transformed a working prototype into a scalable platform — bringing BluSENSE the security, latency performance, and reliability that demanding deployments require.

The result is a hardware platform built the way Markus and Gary wished something had existed when they needed it — flexible enough to handle hundreds of sensors, powerful enough for the most complex building environments, and simple enough to deploy without an army of specialists.

BluSENSE exists because the right tool didn't. Now it does.

Our Mission — BluSENSE

Our Mission

Why We Do It

At BluSENSE, our mission is simple: to build building performance monitoring hardware that actually works — and that professionals at every budget level can afford to deploy. No compromises on accuracy. No vendor lock-in. No data held hostage. Just reliable, field-tested technology that gives you the visibility to make better decisions about the buildings you manage, own, or commission.

Our Core Principles

What We Believe

01
Monitoring without context is noise.

Data is only valuable when it tells you something you can act on. We build systems that don't just collect readings — they give you the clarity to understand what your building is actually doing, and why it matters.

02
You should never be held hostage by the tools you depend on.

Proprietary platforms, vendor lock-in, and data held on someone else's servers are industry norms we reject. BluSENSE works with the sensors, protocols, and platforms you choose — and your data lives on your hardware, not ours.

03
Your data is an asset. It should belong to you.

When you pay for a monitoring system, the data it generates is yours — not a resource for someone else's business model. We process and store everything locally, on your device. What you do with it from there is entirely your decision.

04
Built for the real world, not lab conditions.

BluSENSE was born in the field, not a product roadmap. Every design decision is shaped by actual buildings, actual deployments, and professionals who need hardware that performs when conditions aren't perfect.

What Blu Means — BluSENSE

The Name Behind the Brand

What Blu Means

Blu isn't just a name — it's a commitment to three things every professional who relies on building data deserves.

Clarity
Continuity
BluSENSE
Connection
Clarity

Raw sensor data is noise. BluSENSE turns it into something you can understand, trust, and act on — giving you a clear picture of how your building is really performing.

Connection

Sensors, systems, buildings, and people — all linked. BluSENSE bridges the gap between field hardware and the professionals who depend on that data to make decisions.

Continuity

Always on. No gaps, no interruptions, no data lost to power cuts or network failures. The insight you need is there when you need it — not just when conditions are perfect.

Where We Are Today — BluSENSE

Where We Are Today

From One Project to a Commercial Platform

BluSENSE has evolved from a custom-built solution for a single project into a commercial hardware platform trusted by leading organisations across the building performance, water efficiency, and energy management sectors.

Our product line — BluCORE, BluNODE, and BluPULSE — is designed to work together seamlessly or independently, giving professionals the flexibility to monitor exactly what they need, at the scale they need it.

Every product we make is designed, built, and tested in California. Your data stays on your hardware. And we're just getting started.
